Midwives to the Countryside:

A visual exploration of midwife training programs and the rural-urban divide in China and Taiwan, 1950s

Midwives to the Countryside is a visual companion to my dissertation research on the development of medical authority in the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of China in Taiwan.

Currently, Chapter 1 “Midwives in the Headlines is available to view. This chapter is centered on mapping the locations of midwife training programs as they appeared in the People’s Daily in the early 1950s.

Other chapters will be released this summer, 2023, as they are developed. You can click the “Open Chapters” button to read a brief description of each.
My work here was supported by the Cultural Heritage Informatics Fellowship at Michigan State University. The training and community offered in this fellowship made this, and the continuing development of this project, possible.
